Our Community Involvement

We Are Involved!  We at First National Bank of Gilmer, Texas American Bank, Wood County National Bank and Security State Bank, N.A., sincerely believe in our communities, our neighbors and friends.

We are happy to support our local communities in many ways – below are just a few examples of how we are working hard to make every day better for those around us:

Fill The Bus School Supply Drive
Fill The Bus School Supply Drive

Since 2011, our employees have enjoyed collecting donated school supplies and monetary donations for our Annual Fill The Bus School Supply Drive.  For approximately 4 weeks during July and August each year, our employees at all locations get excited when they see the yellow “Bus Box” appear in the lobby. Everyone tries to guess how big the pile of donated supplies will get as the drive continues.  Each location enjoys hosting either a bake sale, hot dog lunch or baked potato lunch to raise funds for the Drive.

The Fill The Bus program is designed to help area teachers who many times will buy school supplies for children in their classes who start the school year with limited or no supplies because their families can’t afford them. These accumulated supplies are divided up and distributed to local elementary schools at the end of the drive just in time for school to start. Our efforts to make these supplies available have been well received at every school and we look forward to this worthy effort year after year.

EverFi Financial Literacy Program

“We are extremely pleased to offer the EverFi program, the leading financial literacy education program in the United States, to our area high schools”, said Danny Weems, President and Chief Executive Officer of First National Bank of Gilmer.

EverFi Financial Literacy is a web-based program that uses the latest in new media technology, simulations, avatars, gaming and adaptive-pathing to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation.  Through this platform, students become certified in hundreds of topics in personal finance, allowing them to become more informed, responsible citizens. Topics covered under the program include: credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings, 401k’s and other critical concepts that map to national literacy standards.

Jr. Bank Board

First National Bank of Gilmer’s Jr. Bank Board of Directors provides an educational opportunity for high school students to gain knowledge of the role of community banking and learn the essential economic building blocks related to earning, spending, saving and investing money.  Jr. Board members are introduced to various officers and employees of the bank who talk about their selected area of expertise in an inter-active question and answer format.  Jr. Board students are encouraged to ask questions, participate and problem solve.  The Jr. Board also enjoys getting to meet and listen to business owners in the community and questions are always encouraged.

A special format of the EverFi Financial Literacy Program is also set up just for Jr. Board members.  We believe we are providing our Jr. Board members with skills and training they will use as they pursue their life’s goals and plans.  Jr. Board students are encouraged to share what they learn with their friends and family.  First National Bank of Gilmer believes the more students are prepared when they reach college or the work force, the better their quality of life will be.
